KoveScan is a food allergen and ingredient safety app. We take privacy seriously, especially because our users include families with children and individuals with serious medical conditions. This policy explains clearly what we collect, why, and how we protect it.

1. Who We Are

KoveScan ("we," "us," or "our") is a food safety application that uses AI-powered analysis to help users identify allergens and ingredients in food products. We operate the KoveScan mobile application and the website at kovescan.com.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

Your email address
Your name (optional)
Authentication credentials (managed securely by Clerk, our authentication provider)

2.2 Allergy Profile

To personalize your scan results, we store the allergen and dietary preferences you choose to share with us. This information is used solely to provide you with relevant safety alerts. You can update or delete your allergy profile at any time from the app's Settings screen.

2.3 Scan Data

When you scan a food product, we process:

Images you capture or upload (used for OCR and AI analysis, not stored permanently unless you save a scan)
Extracted ingredient text
Analysis results (allergen flags, safety ratings)
Saved scans you choose to keep in your history

Images sent for analysis are processed by our AI provider and are not used to train AI models.

2.4 Email Communications

If you sign up on our website, we collect your email address to send you app access information, product updates, and important announcements. You can unsubscribe at any time.

2.5 Usage Data

We collect standard usage analytics to improve the app, including:

Features accessed and frequency of use
Device type and operating system
App version
Crash reports and error logs

This data is aggregated and does not identify you individually.

2.6 Payment Information

We do not store your payment card details. All payment processing is handled by Stripe, a PCI-DSS certified payment processor. We store only your Stripe customer ID and subscription status.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Provide, operate, and improve the KoveScan service
Personalize your allergen scan results based on your profile
Send you food recall alerts relevant to your allergen profile
Process your subscription and manage billing
Send you product updates, security notices, and support responses
Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or illegal activity
Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your health or allergy information for advertising purposes.

4. Sharing Your Information

We share your information only with:

Clerk — authentication and account management
Stripe — payment processing and subscription management
OpenAI / AI provider — for ingredient label analysis (images and text only; no personally identifiable information is shared)
Cloud infrastructure providers — for hosting and database storage, under data processing agreements
Law enforcement or regulators — when required by applicable law or to protect our users' safety

All third-party providers are contractually required to protect your data and may not use it for their own purposes.

5. Health and Allergy Information

Your allergy profile may be considered sensitive health information. We treat it with the highest level of care:

It is stored encrypted at rest
It is never shared with advertisers
It is never sold
It is used only to personalize your safety results
You can delete it at any time

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account:

Your personal information is deleted within 30 days
Your scan history is deleted within 30 days
Your allergy profile is deleted immediately
Anonymized, aggregated usage data may be retained for analytics purposes
Financial records may be retained for up to 7 years as required by law

7. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

Access the personal information we hold about you
Correct inaccurate information
Delete your account and personal information
Export your data in a portable format
Opt out of marketing emails (every email includes an unsubscribe link)

8. Children's Privacy

KoveScan is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at privacy@kovescan.com and we will delete it promptly.

Parents and guardians may create and manage accounts on behalf of their children to set up allergen profiles for family safety monitoring.

9. Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:

All data is encrypted in transit using TLS/HTTPS
Sensitive data is encrypted at rest
Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel only
We conduct regular security reviews

No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we use commercially reasonable measures to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Medical Disclaimer

KoveScan is a decision-support tool only. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. Always verify ingredients on the physical product label before consumption, especially for severe or life-threatening allergies. Always consult your allergist or healthcare provider for medical guidance. In a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

11. Cookies and Tracking

Our website uses minimal cookies for:

Session management (keeping you logged in)
Remembering your preferences
Basic analytics (page views, referrers)

We do not use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but some features may not function correctly.

KoveScan may include links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. Please review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

When we make significant changes, we will notify you by email or through the app. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
